History

This information was taken from the McDonald's website.

McDonald's franchise owner Jim Delligatti is credited with inventing the famous "double patty triple bun creation" and its "delicious, creamy signature Big Mac special sauce" which launched nationally in 1968.

A few years passed and there were actually two different sauces being used on the Big Mac, but in 1972, the company developed a single recipe.

The recipe was tweaked again in 1991, but in 2004 Fred Turner wanted to return the sauce to the original flavor. He contacted the supplier who helped with the development of the first recipe and returned it to the original formula.

Mayo- gives the sauce that creamy texture and mouthfeel

Sweet or dill pickle relish - can be used interchangeably. Use what you have on hand.

Ketchup or French dressing - another ingredient that I think can be used interchangeable. French dressing will give a tangier flavor. Use what you have on hand.

Minced onions - be sure to dice very fine so the flavor will blend throughout without any big chunks.

White vinegar - helps balance the creaminess

Sugar - you can leave this out if using sweet relish or if you don't want any added sugar.

Instructions

Step One: Combine all ingredient in a small bowl.

Step Two: Mix well until smooth using a whisk.

If you prefer a smoother texture, mix in a blender or food processor.

Keep in a covered container until ready to use.

Top tips

Tastes best when it's had a couple hours in the fridge. Plan to make the sauce ahead of time.

Leftovers last a long time. Store leftover sauce in the fridge in an airtight container for two or three weeks.

A glass jar or container works best so there's no transfer of flavors.

Also tastes good with

Dipping Chicken nuggets, chicken tenders or chicken wings

Dipping French fries or onions rings

Drizzled over salads (tastes a lot like Thousand Island dressing)

Smothered on a French Dip Sandwich or some Hot Dogs

Try my No Bake Chocolate Pie for a quick dessert!

Is Big Mac sauce just Thousand Island dressing?

They are not exactly the same, but have a similar flavor profile. You can substitute the dressing for the burger sauce in a pinch.
