Who We AreThe Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) at Cornell University is a service and a resource to the AAALAC International -accredited Cornell research and teaching community. CARE provides high quality animal care and veterinary services, and advises and educates researchers, staff and students on animal experimentation issues while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals. These actions result in quality science merging with animal welfare.

For the benefit of human and animal health, the mission of CARE is to ensure quality animal care and welfare while serving the Cornell research and teaching community through education and collaboration.

What You Will DoWhile position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

Provide technical and clinical support for the health care, health monitoring programs, exportation programs and preventative medicine programs for Cornell University’s research and teaching animals. Primary responsibility to assigned facilities for clinical care case responses. Must be able to adapt to coverage in any facility and for most species. Oversees an assigned breeding colony and provides colony management utilizing Softmouse software. Conducts trainings as a part of the training program. Volunteers to help with coverage when needed. Manages ordering and inventory. Serve as an institutional resource to the Cornell community for complying with regulatory requirements. Assure university compliance with state and federal standards for animal welfare. Document animal health and regulatory activities in paper and electronic systems. Interact with and train individuals of diverse education and skill levels.

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in veterinary medicine working with multiple species, such as rodents, cats, dogs, cows, pigs, sheep, poultry, horses, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
  • More than 4 years but less than 6 years’ experience.
  • Confidence with basic mouse handling and procedures.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities, schedules and demands; ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities; and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Service oriented, detail oriented, reliable.
  • Interest or experience in animal breeding, health monitoring and colony management.
  • Effective communication skills utilizing a variety of channels.
  • Positive attitude and understanding of how behavior affects others,
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, emails and tracking communications.
  • Ability to work weekends/holidays.
  • Ability and willingness to work with animals exposed to hazardous or zoonotic agents.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.; Good fine motor skills.

What We PreferAdditionally, we would like to see evidence of:

  • Previous experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Veterinary technology certification and/or AALAS certification (preferred or eligible).
  • Familiarity with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service policy, the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, and other applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines.
