Am I able to link predecessors to other sheets that are related to my project? Thank you for sharing best practices on how to do this.

      Hi Heidi,

No; if you have dependencies enabled on your Project Sheet, you will not be able to cell-link Predecessors to another sheet. Please see this Help Center article (here) for types of cells that can't be linked across sheets.

You could copy the data from that row over, but it wouldn't update as the other sheet updates. Or you could create a Report to show specific rows from each sheet, but the rows wouldn't be related to each other (although you could see them all together).

It would be useful to know a bit more about your projects and how they are linked in order to help come up with some other ideas or best practices. Any screen captures you could post would help, too, but please block out sensitive data.

      Cheers,

      Genevieve

    • @Genevieve P. I am working with a client. Each functional leader owns their own workstream (e.g. finance, IT, sales, etc.) under a large project and each leader has a sheet dedicated for their management. In order to reach a milestone, however, sometimes IT + Finance or Finance + Sales must work together. It would great if the predecessors could reference another sheet. I can get a bit more specific if we could chat. Would love to hear of any work arounds.

      Hi @ZCHRYMN

What about creating a Report to bring together two sheets when you know certain action items have to be completed in each separate Workstream? You won't be able to have the rows dependent across sheets, but this would allow you to visualize the combined tasks needed to reach an end goal in Gantt view.

      Cheers,

      Genevieve

Would it be feasible to implement this as a feature? It would be extremely useful since tasks are very often dependent on tasks managed by other teams.

Agree that it would be extremely useful to enable cross-sheet predecessors to integrate diverse and interdependent workstreams owned by different resources. Thanks.

This would also be helpful for archiving sprints/stories to another sheet while still maintaining the predecessor link for future stories.

I started to try out SmartSheet for the company where I am working at. I had big hopes that this feature would be available. Now, unfortunately, I have to read that it doesn't work. That's a great pity. I hope it will be available in the near future!
