New Kingston, or uptown as it is often referred to, is the major commercial centre in Jamaica. Here you will find modern, high-rise buildings, fancy restaurants and beautifully manicured parks.

What is the difference between Kingston and New Kingston Jamaica?

While Kingston is the Island’s capital, New Kingston is located in the parish of St. Andrew and is approximately 1.6 km from the Capital.

Why is it called New Kingston?

To answer this question we have to go back in history a bit. Knutsford Park Race Track was the original name of the region that is now New Kingston. Horse racing and polo games were played on 85 acres of ground on the Liguanea Plain, which stretched from Knutsford Boulevard to Oxford Road.

The largest residential area on the island and the centre of commerce in the 1600s was Port Royal. As a result of their lack of desire to rebuild after a devastating earthquake destroyed Port Royal in 1692, the locals and settlers came to appreciate the worth of the Liguanea Plain, a piece of land across the harbour.

Kingston saw a slow but steady influx of immigrants, and it kept expanding until January 1907, when it abruptly stopped expanding due to a second earthquake and a devastating fire. Downtown Kingston was largely devastated. People in the old city wanted to leave to recoup and rebuild, so they turned to the merchants who owned most of the nearby land. The company owners who had previously lived above their locations in the heart of Kingston moved to the "uptown" or New Kingston area of the Liguanea plains.

A group of businessmen subsequently bought the Knutsford Park Race Track with the intention of creating a new city or what they called a city within a city, hence the name New Kingston.

What to do in New Kingston?

Visit the Restaurants- the restaurants in new Kingston are known for their elegant settings and international cuisine. If you enjoy fine dining you must visit the restaurants in New Kingston.

Visit Devon House- this is the home of Jamaica’s first black millionaire, you can have a picnic on the beautiful lawns, and get ice cream of course; you should know that Devon House Ice cream is considered the best on the island. Or try their bakery’s lobster or curry goat patties.

Tour Emancipation Park- the beautifully manicured lawns of the park is great for picnics, or simply to unwind and read a book. However, Emancipation park is filled with beautiful monuments and statues, giving you a vivid history lesson on Jamaica.

Visit the Museums- museums such as the Bob Marley Museum and the Peter Tosh Museum are located around New Kingston, providing a synopsis of the lives and works of two of Jamaica's most influential people.

New Kingston Jamaica is more than a commercial centre, it is a place to have fun, enjoy good food and learn about the island we all love.
